Description

An beautiful fragment of the curved shoulder of a pottery vessel. High relief hunting scene depicting a dog attacking a human figure, that’s lying nude, with a deer or fawn running below. Representative of the type of wares produced in Roman Britain, that were heavily influenced by eastern Gaul and the Rhineland. The style of hunting scene is typical of the North Western provinces. Barbotine decoration, which is the application of a thick clay slip to the vessel’s surface. Cf.- MET Object number 59.11.15

Origin

Roman Empire circa 1st to early 3rd century AD. Found in Colchester UK. Formerly in a UK collection.

Measurements

Object 11cm wide by 8cm high. Height on stand 14.5cm.

Condition

A shard that has been reglued from 3 pieces with losses and chips. Presented on a custom made stand.
