Roman Bronze Imperial Eagle perched on a Bulls Head No.2

$2,895.00

Description

Fabulous Roman bronze Imperial Eagle perched on a bulls head. Extensive detailing to create a feathered look on the eagle, and the hide of a bull. Eagle with details to the eye and clawed feet, which are clutching the bulls horns. The shape of the rear of the piece indicates it was likely a  decorative fitting or fixture to a furniture or larger decorative bronze object. Possibility it was a fitting on a chariot. Likely to be related to the Roman God Jupiter Dolichenus, who is sometimes encountered in objects, perched as a man on a bulls back. Whilst there is little real detail of the religious aspects of the cult, altars dedicated by Legions throughout parts of the empire, indicate it was popular with the military. Likely origin of the God was a Roman adaption of an oriental god within the Empire. At least 19 temples are known to have been built throughout the Empire dedicated to him.
