Description
A rare piece of religious and architectural history from Reims Cathedral in France. This plaster cast of an Angel comes from the original one off mould made during continuing restorations, on the structure. In 1977 the notable French sculptor Charles Auffret was hired by the Monuments Historiques, as a consultant for the restorations of the Reims Cathedral. During these works the original casts were taken, then stored in the Reims Museum for future work, and reference. Auffret made a copy from the mould to include in his own collection.
Origin
From the Estate of sculptor Charles Auffret. Sold from the clearance of his final sculpture studio. Born 1929 Bescancon, Died 2001 Clichy. Studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. A notable sculptor and teacher he taught drawing at Academie Malebranche in 1958. In 1967 took over as chair of drawing and sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Reims until 1991. He was appointed professor at Ecole Nationale Superieure in Paris, where he taught until 2001. Exhibited at various galleries including Salons de la Rose-Croix in Paris, Galertie de Nevers Paris, Driguez Gallery Paris, Maison du Loir-et-Cher in Blois and The Museum of Vendome.
Won the International sculpture Prize from Paul Recard Foundation, along with the Charles Malfray Grand Prize for Drawing. He received the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Francais. Also won the Leon Baudry Prize given by the Taylor Foundation.
After his death, the Nicolas Plescoff Gallery in Paris in 2001 and the Mainssieux Museum in Voiron in 2002 paid tribute to him. A retrospective of his work was organized at the Villa Medici in Rome inn the spring of 2007. In 2012 , his work was presented at the Despiau-Wlerick Museum in Mont-de-Marsan, at the Malaquais Gallery in Paris in 2014, and at the Taylor Foundationi Paris in 2019.

Condition
Good condition on a custom made stand. Hollow backed as per taking a casting from a mould. This comes with a wooden block stand of 4cm in height with decorative routed edges.
