Description

A lovely Cathaginian or  Phoenician coloured glass head bead with intact suspension loop. A white face with cobalt blue eyebrows and eye detail yellow mouth and ears. Multicoloured rear to bead with red-brown, yellow, black and white swirled and intermingled coloured glass. Cf Bonhams Lot 94 5th December 2024 and Bonhams Lot 184 29th April 2004 as examples.

Origin

Phoenician glass Head bead circa 6th to 3rd century BC. The Phoenicians were a group of city/trading cities running along the East coast of the Mediterranean corresponding with areas of modern Lebanon, Syria and Israel, with key cities Tyre, Byblos, Beirut and Sidon. They stretched further to the west along the coast of North Africa and Iberia (Spain) with Carthage being significant until sacked and destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC

Condition

Very good ancient condition with expected wear for a used item. Pitting to surface as per age of bead.
