Iberian Bronze Statue of a Priest Figure

Description

Iberian bronze figure of a Priest figure. Detailed facial features with outstretched arms with oversize hands in a gesture of supplication. Wearing long cloak-like garment. Small scale votive figures of this nature would have been placed in shrines to seek the favour of the gods.

Origin

Iberians were not a clearly defined cultural group, rather this was the term adopted by the ancient Greeks and Romans to refer to those people living in the East and South of the Iberian Peninsula (Parts of modern day Spain and Portugal). This area was conquered by both the Carthaginian’s and Rome. Object circa 600 to 400 BC

Height  of item 5.0cm x width 3.0cm. Height on stand 9.5cm

Condition

Very good ancient condition. Nice Verdigris finish and colour. Mounted on a custom made stand.
