Byzantine Empire terracotta “Greek Fire” Ceramic hand grenade. Piriform shaped body with incised decoration, with two sets of double lines running around the circumference. Incised vertical striations between the lines. Intended for filling with an explosive liquid and a wick, and thrown as a grenade.

Byzantine Empire circa 9th to 11th century AD

Measurements

Length 13cm width 8cm. Height on stand 17.5cm

Condition

Good ancient condition. Presented on a custom made Perspex, timber and brass stand.
