Ancient Seal Impression on Copper on Lead

Description

An ancient cylinder seal impression that has been cast in copper laid onto lead. Image featured, shows a chariot drawn by 4 horses plus several birds and possibly stylised face on the right of the impression. The impression  likely to be a Museum deaccession.

Origin

The impression has been made from an ancient cylinder seal, from Western Asiatic regions, including Mesopotamian, Babylonian, Sumerian and Akkadian cultures.  Based on the cost and complexity of making these impressions, normally made using clay, they came from a serious and significant collection of cylinder seals. Likely a deaccession from a museum collection or that of a prominent private collection.

Seal impression width 5.75cm Height 3.0cm. Height on stand 7cm width 8.0cm

Condition

impression of an ancient seal image made late 1800s to mid 1900s. Presented on a custom made Perspex and wood stand.
