Ancient Egyptian faience fragmentary figure of the God Bes. Bes was an ancient protective god of households, mothers, children and childbirth. Represented in a grotesque form as a dwarf, with large head , google eyes protruding tongue and bow legs. The worship of Bes wasn’t restricted to Egypt, spreading to Syria, parts of Spain and the Roman Empire, to name a few. It is thought he may originally been of Nubian origin, with the Nubian word for Bes meaning cat. cf.- Louvre object No. E5723 and E5689 and EA 74099.

Object 12.5cm high 5cm wide. Height on stand 18cm

 

Condition

A fragmentary figure with missing pieces as per the photos. Remains of a blue/green faience to face. Presented on a custom made stand. Rare in this size.
